Bratislava St. Martin Cathedral - details and images

St. Martin Parish Church was originally dedicated to the Holy Saviour The castle built in Bratislava. It was moved to a location below the castle with the approval of Pope Innocent III at the request of King Emerich of Hungary. Reconstruction of the Gothic style, was held in sec. XIV.

The cathedral was the coronation place between 1563-1830. The first was crowned here was Maximillian II. Coronation ceremony took place on 8 September 1563. It was followed by another 18 coronations, including that of her and Maria Teresa on 25 June 1741. The last king who received the royal crown from the statue of St. Martin lead was Ferdinand V in September 1830. A complete list of kings and royal wives are crowned in the Cathedral on a panel inside the north wall. Every year there is a simulation of one of the kings coronation as a popular holiday.

Reconstruction of the Baroque cathedral focused first on the inside and later on the construction of the chapel in April. Between 1732-1734 plan expanded area for Chapel of St. John, Almsgiver.
