Cave Knolls - details and images

Considered by scientists "a corner of Mars", Knolls cave was discovered accidentally in 1986 in an area called " The Knolls", in the north-western city of Mangalia.

Discovered in a mine shaft is one of the most famous caves in the world, with 240 m long, with short and spectacular galleries. It is a relatively small cave with narrow passages covered with clay. It was developed especially with several cavities horizontally depasesc3 not meters.

The lower part is a small lake that connects the cave plateau groundwater. Passages continues under water, forming three bells of air where the atmosphere is very rich in carbon dioxide (up to 10 times higher than outside) and low in oxygen - third from the outside atmosphere.

It became an underground cave ecosystem known thanks very unique, which is rich in species adapted to the cave environment and is based entirely on chemical energy resulting from the oxidation of hydrogen sulfurat.Ecosistemul underground works on chemosintezei and was completely separate from the outdoor environment while about 5.5 million years.

In total there were 35 species found entirely new living in an environment rich in hydrogen sulfide with an oxygen atmosphere very poor, but rich in carbon dioxide and methane. Only in 1990 they began exploration, during which the cave was isolated.

Among the creatures found there was a centipede that measured 10 cm, whose bite is venomous.

Residents have a pale underground, and what differentiates them complete their relatives on the surface is the total lack of vision and the giant antennas that they use to move around in the dark. Simple human presence in this place, seriously threatening the life of the ecosystem because the respiratory simple process, can cause imbalances by adjusting the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the cave. Therefore Cave can be visited Knolls than specialists, in teams of 2-3 people, and during a visit must not exceed two hours.
