Egg's Castle - Naples - details and images

Castello dell'Ovo (literally Castle egg) is a fortress located to the north-west of the historic city center on a promontory in the Gulf of Naples. According to legend, the Roman poet Virgil built a fortress egg foundations to give greater stability of the walls.

The first fort on this site was built in the sixth century BC The original Greek settlers in the city of Cuma. In the first century, Patricia Roman Lucius Licinius Lucullus built a villa on the promontory where the early fifth century was transformed into a fortress.

In the eleventh century, the city's residents are Roman buildings demolished to prevent their occupation by pirates Saraceni. Today fortress was built in the early twelfth century and functioned as a royal residence until the construction of New Castle.

Castle is connected by a land bridge, which is a popular place for newlyweds to make their wedding photos. Bridge is 100 meters long. The castle has a rectangular shape and a large angular bastion overlooking the bridge.

Inside the walls are several rooms that are often used for exhibitions and other special events. Behind the castle is a long cape, which was probably used as a docking area. A round tower, outside the walls are huge castle in the south-east.

In the nineteenth century a small fishing village (Borgo Marinari) developed around the eastern wall of the castle. This village is now known to harbor and its restaurants.
