National Art Museum in Cluj Napoca - details and images

Cluj National Art Museum owns a very valuable heritage of the Romanian and European art: paintings, graphics and decorative art (XV-XX centuries). Founded in 1951, the museum has received since its establishment, some older funds: a small collection of curiosities, cutlery, furniture and European painting from the Museum collection Ardelean and especially known "Virgil Cioflec Pinacoteca.

His name Cioflec Virgil (1876-1948), author of reference monographs dedicated painters Luchian Stephen (1924) and Nicolae Grigorescu (1925), as well as some relevant writings on art published in the press time, an act of cultural link of great significance for the life of Cluj wars: donating his collection of Romanian art, University of Cluj (1929-1930). Virgil Deschidrea Cioflec painting collection to the public (1933) meant, in fact, opening in Cluj Romanian first modern art museum, whose successor became the National Art Museum Cluj.

Made with passion and competence able to cherish the values enshrined in the knower (Nicolae Grigorescu, Stefan Luchian Paciurea Demetrius) and foresight to support the assertion of authentic talent (Pallady, Camil Ressu, Vasile Popescu, Jean Al. Steriadi, Lucian Grigorescu, Oscar Han Cornel Medrea), Virgil Cioflec collection still represents the core value of heritage Cluj National Art Museum.

The museum is housed in an important Baroque building from the XVIII century German architect Johann Eberhard Blaumann. Floor space for the palace is the National Gallery. In 1990, the National Gallery was closed for reorganization, as required advanced state of degradation of the building and the need to hold constant exposure to the new research and ahiziţionate or donated parts lately. Through a careful restoration, large exhibition space on the floor Banffy palace has regained a configuration that closely approximates the original, while being perfectly suited to the function of art museum. 325 pieces were selected paintings and sculptures which have prepared a statement dress (restoration, conservation frames, mats) suitable for their artistic value outstanding.
