The building was built very quickly, in spite of fierce controversy about the project. It was inaugurated on May 16, 1792 with an opera by Giovanni Paisiello, I giochi di Agrigento (Agrigento Games in). Competition for the project was published on 1 November 1789, and the works were started in April 1790 under the direction of Giannantonio Selva.

Throughout the work, lyric Venetian representations have been held at "Palafenice", a temporary structure erected for that purpose only the Tronchetto, and the Malibran Theatre.

Theater room is composed of five rows of stalls. The theater is decorated in an abundance of gold and silver medallions and plates and bright in color, whose job is to distract the viewer a bit during the shows.
