Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in the county of Warwickshire, West Midlands, England. It is the administrative center of Stratford-on-Avon District. Stratford is known worldwide as the birthplace of William Shakespeare.
Stratford is located in the vicinity of the second largest city in the United Kingdom, Birmingham is easily accessible from junction 15 of the M40 motorway. It has good rail links from Birmingham (Snow Hill) and flights to London.
Stratford has Anglo-Saxon origin and was developed as a fair in the medieval period. Because association with the name of Shakespeare, Stratford is a famous landmark, visited by more than two million tourists annually. Besides tourism, the city is industrial production and construction of aluminum boats. In recent years, the influx of tourists has caused tension with residents of Stratford, complained that tourists buses blocking roads in the city.
The city is situated on the River Avon, which lies on the banks of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Royal Shakespeare Company's headquarters. Other attractions of the city is the birthplace of Shakespeare and two buildings of the period, Hall's Croft (one-time home of Shakespeare's daughter, Susannah) and New Place, stands on the site of a house owned by the playwright. Also in town is Holy Trinity Church (Holy Trinity Church), where Shakespeare was baptized and where he is buried.
In the immediate vicinity of the town are two other properties associated with Shakespeare: Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Shakespeare's wife's first housing, house and home of his mother. The latter was recently re-identified as being in a different house than was originally thought to have links with the family.
Nearby attractions include Shakespearean unrelated Teddy Bear Museum, a butterfly farm and the Black Swan (Dirty Duck called by locals), a pub frequented by young actors.
Another famous writer, JB Priestley, died at Stratford.
