Bears Cave

Bears Cave

Crisana, RomaniaThe cave of the Bears of Chiscau, Bihor county, was accidentally discovered in 1975. Following the local mining operations, the opening to the underground void was realized by dynamiting the entrance. The miner Traian Curta was the first to descend into this cave, through the gallery to the Great Hall of the cave. The Bear Cave was discovered following works executed at a quarry located in the immediate vicinity of Chiscau village in Peietroasa commune, Bihor county in Romania. The name of Bear Cave comes from the many bear bones found in the cave. Following the researches, it was established that in the Bear Cave lived bears from the cave of the species Ursus spelaeus (cave bear). According to the same research, it was found that the oldest bones are 100,000 years old and the "last tenant" was "only" 17,000 years old. The cave bears had impressive dimensions compared to the current species of bears in Romania and even in the world. The cave bear was about 4 meters high in 2 paws and an impressive weight of 1000 Kg. At the time of the Bears Cave discovery, there were 5 complete skeletons of the species Ursus Spelaeus and the 6th complete skeleton was discovered in this cave. Unfortunately, the complete skeleton of the cave bear is in an area that is not visited, from the Scientific Reserve.
