The city is linked to a colony (in a place called Petersbergl) of monks from the monastery Schäftlarn. It is unknown the exact date of foundation settlement. The first document dates from 1158 under the Medieval Latin Munichen villa during Heinrich der Löwe (Henry the Lion), Duke of Saxony. A half century later the town received city status and was fortified.
