It is one of the most important events that it hosts Sighet, which aims to be, as stated in the first edition of the carnival and festival traditions and customs of the county of Maramures winter (27 to 28 December 1969): "an opportunity and modaliate a while to print a new meaning and content of ancient customs and traditions, to enhance and present all that is more enduring and more authentic Maramures in folk art forged by many generations of wonderful people in the north of our country . This goal has been preserved over time, the festival has become "a habit, a sign of ground, evidence of creative power and permanence, but also a sign of spiritual solidarity, unity and continuity of our entire Romanian land" (Programme edition a XXX-a) and managed to inform the public on national and international traditions, costumes and customs of the winter (Christmas carols and games with masks) and performed at Christmas to Epiphany.
The festival is performed without interruption since 1969, around the date of December 27, of 2011 will be the 43rd edition.
Besides representatives of villages and folk ensembles Maramures, Sighet iubitotri come and ancestral customs of other regions of the country (Banat, Moldova, Bucovina, Dobrogea, Oltenia, etc..). Even foreign teams have "played" on the streets of Sighet (Ukraine Transcarpati).
The festival usually begins with the receipt in front of city hall, a vent in Vadul Plugusorul Iza. The highlight is the procession which takes place on city streets. Each band (dressed in costumes typical of this region which has come) will present a carol, a game with specific masks or winter habit. Delighting audiences devils and masked characters, horsemen and carriages give flavor to the event. After exhausting this time, participating groups say a gala show, in which he shows a part of their repertoire.
Veins of the city will bite, so viewers, and by the devils, riders, children and adults dressed in costumes, which will share a bit of great soul of the Romanian Peasant, traditions and customs through the winter.
