Basilica San Marco in Venice, known as the Cathedral in Venice, is the patriarchal cathedral of Venice, dedicated to St. Mark.

Basilica San Marco is the most famous of the churches of the city and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture. Located in Piazza San Marco, near and connected to the Doge's Palace. Initially, the church was not exclusive to Venice and the cathedral city leaders. In 1807 became the residence of the Patriarch of Venice.
For its opulent design, covered with Byzantine mosaics, and its status as a symbol of wealth and power of Venice's Basilica is known since the 11th century as Chiasa d'Oro (Golden Church).
Building is 76.5m length, width of 62.5 and has five domes. Outside of the dome height is 43m, the interior of 28.15m.
But the Byzantine architectural style is Gothic elements are found. The beginning of its construction began in 1094 and ended in 1617.

Outside the church is divided into five arches separated by columns decorated with polychrome marble. Above the central door is a mosaic overlaid with gold (nineteenth century) representing the Last Judgement. At the top of the church are four statues of saints and warriors of San Marco who watches over the city. Above the central window of the façade, under the statue of San Marco is the winged lion (symbol of the church), and horses in the middle of the balcony was the Romans.

The interior is based on a Greek cross with each arm divided into three parts. The church building was inspired by the Church of the Apostles in Constantinople Justinian. The surface is covered with mosaic of 8000 m2. Upper surface of the interior is covered with brilliant mosaics which contains gold, bronze and a variety of stones.

If you want to visit the church must be careful how you dress, you can not go with large luggage, photographing or videotaping is prohibited and as loud conversations.

- Treasure: 9:45 and 17:00. Sunday and holidays: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Bell: 9:00 and 19:00 (between July and September: 9:00 to 9:00 p.m. and in November 9:30 and 15:45)

The admission fee is:
- Church: free entry
- Museum St. Marco: 4 €, 2 € reduced for groups of 15 persons
- Pala d'Oro: 2 €, 1 € lower for larger groups of 15 persons
- Treasure: 3 €, 1.5 € lower for larger groups of 15 persons
