Berlin Holocaust Memorial - details and images

In May 2005, the 60th anniversary of the overthrow of the Nazi regime and the end of World War II, the city opened the Berlin Holocaust Memorial, a monument designed to commemorate the six million killed by Hitler and the forces Hebrew Nazi.

The idea of a Holocaust memorial was first brought to the attention of the monument in 1988 but the project was approved only in 1999. Very controversial project of U.S. architect Peter Eisenman was chosen as a tribute to Jews killed during the war because of Hitler's plan to exterminate them.

Eisenman's project is unique and has attracted a lot of praise but also criticism. Berlin Holocaust Memorial occupies approximately 19,000 square meters near the Brandenburg Gate and within walking distance of where Hitler's bunker is buried. 2711 Holocaust Memorial is made of gray stone slabs that do not have any signs such as names and dates.

Slabs curls after a pattern, each of which is a monolith with five girls, unique shape and size. Some of them only reach a few centimeters of the ground and some are higher than a state of man. Paths of these slabs are also wavy, Eisenman has tried to create such a floating sentimet and instability, a sense of disorientation. Most tourists agree that the architect and achieved what he proposed.

Visitors can stroll through the monument without restriction in any direction because there was no pattern of stones. The architect said he hopes to become a Holocaust memorial part of the city and come to be confused with what is around him, to be used as a shortcut on the way home Berliners or as a place to relax after a busy day.

Holocaust Memorial, officially called the Monument of murdered Jews in Europe can be visited anytime, at any time of day and night. An underground information center, located just below the monument offers stories of families or people who have had to deal with the rage of the Nazi party and here you can learn more about design and construction of the memorial.
