Big Ben - details and images

Big Ben was installed in 1859 and has acquired its name from the famous 13-tonne bell to announce the exact hour and a half. It was built between 1858 - 1859 when the world's most famous hour came in functiune.Turnul was built on the place of Westminster Palace.

The first 61 meters of the Big Ben tower are built of stone, the remainder being steel construction. The four sides of the watch measures a total of around 55 meters. Big Ben tower height is measuring 96 meters. Clock mechanism weighs approximately 5 tons. Big Ben announces the current time but also announcing the quarter hour. BBC announce the exact hour of live microphones installed in the tower where the bell is located.

Although the term refers strictly to the Big Ben clock, the British use this term referring to the entire tower. Its sound is heard on December 31 on most radio and television channels in England at the turn of the new year and start the New Year. The building belongs to Benjamin Hall who actually gave the name of Ben, the bell was pretty solid but as they called simply Big Ben, a name that is still preserved today. It attracts thousands of tourists because of his celebrity. In 2007 the clock was stopped for repairs.

The bell was named after the first commissioner who worked in construction - Benjamin Hall. This bell comes from the old palace of Westminster and was given deacon at St. Paul (St. Paul's Cathedral) by William III. Before returning to Westminster to occupy their current place in the house was reconditioned at the Whitechapel in 1858. The first BBC broadcast was opened by the sound of Big Ben in 1923 to 31 December. Since there is a microphone plugged into the tower at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

During the Second World War in 1941, an incendiary bomb destroyed the House of Commons, part of the Parliament in London (the Houses of Parliament), but the clock tower remained intact and Big Ben continued to measure the hours and minutes. The sound was transmitted by radio or the British people and the world as an incentive to hope for all who heard him.

There are 11 rooms inside the tower where Members of Parliament can be imprisoned for violations of regulations of the constitution. This happens very rarely, the last such incident was recorded in 1880. Big Ben tower is not open for public visit, but the outside is more impressive anyway.
