Carol's Bridge - most Karlův - details and images

It is a famous bridge loaded with statues blackened by time, with painters, puppeteers, musicians and souvenir vendors. Legend says that when King Karel IV ordered the lifting bridge, which is built on is crumbling night. Following a dream, the king ordered that the bridge be mixed mortar wine and eggs, so that work can be completed. As in Prague were not enough eggs, have been contributing and other surrounding cities, but of which we were retained only the name Velvar city whose inhabitants, lest they break the fragile cargo sent hard-boiled eggs. Charles Bridge construction began in 1357 and was completed at the beginning of the fifteenth century. It has 515 meters long and 9.50 meters wide, has 16 pillars (with heights between 16 and 23 meters) and the paving is 13 feet above the river Vltava. Since 1657 a street has developed unique statues along the bridge. At first, the statues were actually some crosses in 1657 and was brought even a gilded bronze cross. Monuments of Golgotha, Mary worried and St John the Evangelist were added in the seventeenth century.
