Fortified Church Greater Copsa - details and images

Copsa Mare is a town in Sibiu County. Free commune of the old Fundus Regius, Copsa Great ruled the largest and most renowned vineyards of Wine Country. At the beginning of the fourteenth century services were officiated in a Gothic basilica with three naves, but a document of 1283 brings the older hypothesis of a basilica.

As in many other cases, and hence the basilica has undergone many changes over time due to political and economic situation in Transylvania. The fact that this community has experienced a fairly rapid economic rise has led the inhabitants of Großkopisch to want a church as beautiful as in the adjoining Biertan.

The comprehensive plan for the construction of the church, initiated by the community, which was done only to increase the choir vestry on the north wall and the annexation was halted after Transylvania came under Ottoman suzerainty after the defeat of Mohács (1526) and was forced to payment of taxes burdensome. The inscription on the frame vestry, mentions 1519 as the year of closing of the works to expand the choir, that is four years after it was over and the site of Biertan.

Transformation of the interior works were resumed at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The earthquake significantly damaged the church in 1802 and was re-founded the site renovations. They have rebuilt some of the collaterals abolished in the sixteenth century and added a gallery for the organ in the west.

Defense wall was built at the beginning of XVI century. On the northern corner is almost a square tower on two levels, similar to those provided with masiculiuri Biertan. Such a tower is also on the southwest corner. Along the wall were built pantry supplies, then dismantled

It is possible that some masters from the site of Biertan Copsa have worked on the Great, as some details seem to indicate the construction of the choir.
