Justice Palace - details and images

The location allows some superb panoramic views over the city located in the valley. The building provides a view similar to that which can be seen from a high tower guard. The project of monumental palace was not welcomed by everyone, one highly controversial.

With 20,000 square meters, the building was designed by architect Joseph Poelaert, who died four years before the completion of work in 1883. Building style is described as asiro-Babylonian, a mix of styles. The building is about three times larger than the Royal Palace and was commissioned by Leopold II, one of the first kings of Belgium. The construction lasted over 20 years and cost approximately 300 million dollars in actual money. Is assumed to be the largest building in the world built in the nineteenth century.

The main reason for the Palais de Justice in Brussels was a project so controversial was that 3,000 houses had the Marolles-Sablon demolished to make room for them. People in the area were extremely angry. At the inauguration of the building there were protests, and the term architect fell almost laughable, assuming a negative connotation.

Outside, the Palais de Justice is a huge gray building with many columns and a large golden dome. A glass elevator at the ends of the bridge leading to the hill in the Marolles, where the peasantry and working class in the past looked up towards the symbol of justice. Glass elevator and he offers a nice view, and its use is free.
