Măcin Mountains National Park is located in Tulcea County, in north-western Dobrogea, and protects a massif of high geological, biological and landscape value. The Măcin Mountains are considered the oldest mountains in Romania, and their current appearance shows a long history of erosion. The altitudes are modest, but the relief has a strong identity through rocky ridges, rounded peaks, granite blocks, dry valleys, sparse forests and steppe areas.

The park offers a different experience from the Carpathians. Here, visitors do not find high ridges, compact forests on steep slopes or long alpine routes, but an open, bright landscape with steppe influences, a drier climate and wide views over Dobrogea. This difference makes the Măcin Mountains especially interesting. In a relatively compact area, mountain, steppe, forest and rocky habitats meet.

One of the best-known points of the park is Țuțuiatu Peak, the highest peak in the Măcin Mountains. Trails leading to it usually start from the Greci area and are accessible for travellers with ordinary physical condition, when the weather is good. From the ridge, wide views open over the surroundings, and the landscape clearly shows the difference between the low mountains of Dobrogea and the agricultural or hilly areas around them.

Pricopan Ridge is another important landmark. The area is known for its granite formations, massive rocks, paths climbing among boulders and very good views over the town of Măcin, the Danube and the Dobrogea plains. It is one of the most photogenic parts of the park, especially in the morning or toward evening, when the light highlights the texture of the rocks.

Biodiversity is one of the main reasons why the area is protected. The park shelters steppe plants, Mediterranean species, oak forests, meadows, shrubs, reptiles, birds and insects adapted to a warmer and drier climate. For nature enthusiasts, the Măcin Mountains are very interesting through their mixture of species and habitats. In spring, flowers and vegetation quickly change the appearance of the slopes, while in autumn the colours become warmer and more suitable for photography.

Valea Fagilor is one of the special areas of the park, because it preserves a type of vegetation that may seem surprising for Dobrogea. The presence of beech in a space known especially for steppe and dryness shows the diversity of microclimates in the Măcin Mountains. This area deserves careful attention, because it explains well why the park has scientific value, not only tourist value.

The trails in the park are suitable for walks of a few hours or for one-day hikes. The most used starting points are Greci, Măcin, Cerna, Luncavița and other localities at the foot of the massif. Although the routes do not reach high altitudes, preparation remains important. In summer, heat can be demanding, and shade is limited in some areas. Water, a hat, comfortable footwear and checking the route are necessary.

Măcin Mountains National Park is suitable for landscape photography, birdwatching, easy hiking and exploring a type of mountain rarely found in Romania. Its relationship with the Danube, its proximity to the Danube Delta and the Dobrogea character of the landscape make it easy to include in a wider route through Tulcea, Măcin, Greci, Niculițel or Luncavița.

The visit should be made with respect for the rules of the protected area. Plants should be left in place, waste must be taken back, and marked trails should be followed. Rocky areas, meadows and steppe habitats are sensitive, even if they seem robust at first sight. Măcin Mountains National Park deserves to be visited for its old, bright and distinctive landscape, for its accessible trails and for the biodiversity that makes this massif a special place in Romania.
