Palatine Hill (Palatino) - details and images

Hill has a strong connection with Romanian mythology. It is believed that on the Palatine Hill, the twins Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf who raised and it was ultimately the place where Romulus decided to build the city. We can say that on this hill Roman Empire began.

In an era of Republican Rome, Palatine Hill had become an area where they lived most senior citizens of the town, mainly due to the amazing views that could be seen from the hilltop. Augustus, Cicero and Marcus Antonius all had houses on the hill. Later emperors built their areas here and at some point, the entire hillside was covered with imperial palaces.

In the Middle Ages, churches and monasteries were built on the Palatine hill. Later, nearly the entire hill of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese became the property, which he founded a botanical garden on the hill over the ruins. Historians say that in the past it was thought that air was cleaner on top of the hill and those who lived on the Palatino had much lower chances of getting sick from the working class as opposed to air breathing worse at the bottom of the hill.

In the north west of the Palatine hill are the ruins of Tiberius's palace (Caligula's Palace) built in the first century of our era. Not much left of it since he bought the hill Cardinal Allessandro Farnese in 1550 and decided to build a garden above the old ruins. The garden was first botanical garden in Europe and have many rare plants. Garden Roman Forum was linked by several rows of stairs.
