Peri Monastery Sapanta - details and images

Peri Monastery, located near the village Sapanta, was founded at the time the site of an ancient rulers Dragosesti Hermitage Arghanghel wearing patron saint Michael.

Voievodul Balcu then and Drag (Dragos Voda's nephews) have given the monastery lands and goods so that in 1391 it built a stone church. It is elevated to the rank of Patriarchate Stavropegic with jurisdiction over eight counties and churches for 312 years has been based here and the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Maramures. During this period, Peri Sapanta served as a residence and several bishops including Joseph Stoica, later canonized by the Holy Synod in 1992 with the name of Saint Joseph of Maramures Confessor commemorated on 24 April.

Peri-Sapanta there was also a meaningful penmanship in schools in Romania, there have been translated and copied for the first time in Romanian Psalter, Gospel Legend Sunday, Codex Voronetean and Acts.

Destroyed in 1703, Peri Monastery was reconstructed in the twentieth century and the beginning of XXI century Dendrologic Orchard Park, not far from the original location.

Here was built the tallest wooden church in the world, the church is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, 78 feet high (taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York). Construction was carried out according to the plans by master architect Cordos Dorel said John Stiopei Buga in Barsana.

The church was consecrated on 31 August 2003, although construction works are not yet fully completed even now. Also during 2003-2004 and the shrine was built by master John Stiopei summer.
