Raysko Praskalo Waterfall - details and images

Raysko Praskalo Waterfall is located in Central Balkan National Park, below Botev Peak, the highest summit in the Balkan Mountains. Its Bulgarian name, Rayskoto Praskalo, is often translated as “Heavenly Spray”, a name that fits the landscape well. The water drops from a steep rock wall into a wide mountain setting, surrounded by alpine meadows, cliffs and open views.

With a height of about 124.5 metres, Raysko Praskalo is considered the highest permanent waterfall in Bulgaria. It lies in the Dzhendema Reserve, one of the most impressive parts of Central Balkan National Park, close to the mountain routes leading towards Botev Peak.

Access is usually made from Kalofer and the Panitsite area. The trail to Ray Hut is one of the best-known hiking routes in Bulgaria, and the waterfall becomes more visible as you approach the hut. This is a mountain hike, not a quick roadside stop, so good footwear, water and enough time are important.

Ray Hut is the main landmark for visitors heading towards Raysko Praskalo. Placed below the rocky walls, in a very photogenic mountain setting, the hut marks one of the most beautiful parts of the route. From this area, the waterfall can be seen against the cliffs, with a strong contrast between the green slopes, the rock and the white line of falling water.

The best time to visit is late spring and early summer, when melting snow feeds the waterfall. In dry periods, the flow may be weaker, while after rain some sections of the trail can become more difficult. For photography, clear days are the best, especially in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the light brings out the shape of the cliffs.

Raysko Praskalo Waterfall is a good choice for travellers who enjoy mountain hiking and natural landscapes. The route combines forest, steady climbing, alpine meadows and open views, while the proximity to Botev Peak gives the area a more serious mountain character.

A successful visit requires an early start, suitable clothing and a quick check of the weather conditions before the hike. Weather can change fast in this part of the Balkan Mountains, and fog may reduce visibility. Travellers who want to continue towards Botev Peak should be prepared for a more demanding route.

Raysko Praskalo is worth adding to a Bulgaria itinerary for its mountain setting, height and connection with one of the most beautiful areas of Stara Planina. It is a natural attraction reached through effort and attention to the terrain, and that is part of its appeal.
