Samaria keys - details and images

A deep ravine, sometimes with almost vertical walls, spectacularly splits the cliffs and high mountains on the western side of the island of Crete. Over a length of 18 km, the Samaria Keys meander, when narrower, when wider, following a meandering and meandering route through Levká Ori, that is, the White Mountains, whose slopes glow white in the summer sun, and in winter they are covered in snow. The keys were dug during the Tarraíos River, which runs parallel to a ridge between the Pachnes Massif to the east and the Gíngilos and Volakiás mountains to the west. In winter, the river turns into a vicious stream, but in summer it looks more like a crystalline stream. Due to the beauty of the landscape and the possibility of hiking, the Samaria Gorge is an important tourist attraction. The keys are located in Samaria National Park. Here, for a distance of 13 km, you can drink only spring water, even in the port of Agia Roumeli drinking water comes only from the streams of the mountain. Only at the southern exit of the park, on the shores of the Libyan Sea, are some kiosks.
