Temple of Heaven - Tiantan - details and images

The complex, originally called the Temple of heaven and earth, was built between 1406 and 1420, the Yongle Emperor, also responsible for building China's Forbidden City or Imperial Palace.

The complex was expanded and named Temple of Heaven during Emperor Jiajing in the sixteenth century. It has since built three temples: the Temple of the sun in the east, the Temple of Earth in the north west and the Temple of the month. Temple of Heaven was renovated in the eighteenth century under the Emperor Quianlong and between the years 2005-2007 during the preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Temple of Heaven was registered on UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
