National and European priority in the Romanian culture, the first theater in Romania and the south-east of Europe, the Old Mihai Eminescu Theater was built between 1814-1817 in the Viennese Baroque style. The faithful, small-scale copy of the Vienna Burgtheater, this space of culture was inaugurated on October 5, 1817 by the imperial family, Francis I of Habsburg-Lorraine. Other absolute premieres: the Crai Nou operetta was first installed on the theater stage and is the first building in Europe to be artificially lit, with acetylene lamps.
