What started as just a small collection of sculptures, has become over the centuries, a most wonderful museum complex containing one of the world's most important collections of art of mankind.

Vatican Museums were founded under the patronage of two popes in the eighteenth century - Clement XIV and Pius VI. They were among the first allowed access to collections of public art, promoting the culture among the masses. The first building of the museum complex, Pio-Clementine Museum was named after these two pontiffs.

Over the years, several popes have added to already impressive collection of works from the Vatican. Today there are 13 museums and collections of the Vatican Palaces and another 14 that are included in tours of the Vatican Museums complex. The complex of museums worth visiting are only inside buildings and are decorated with frescoes and marble. Museums that comprise the complex of the Vatican museums are very wide and diverse. Vatican Pinacoteca, one of the newest museum, opened in 1932, is an exhibition of paintings. The paintings shown here dates from the 12th century to the 19th century and occupies entire rooms dedicated to works of great artists such as DaVinci, Bernini and Raphael. There is also an exhibition of icons unique to the 15th century until the 19th century.

Founded by Pius XI in 1926, the Missionary Ethnological Museum display of religious objects from four different geographic regions - Asia, Oceania, Africa and America. Over 80,000 pieces that make up the museum collection dramatically. Price: 14 €, reduced € 8 ball. Tickets are valid for museums and the Sistine Chapel. Tickets for guided tours cost up to 41 € depending on the duration of the tour.
