Selimiye Mosque In Edirne

Marmara, TurkeySelimiye Mosque is one of the best-known Ottoman buildings in Turkey and stands in the centre of Edirne, close to the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. It was built between 1568 and 1575 on the orders of Sultan Selim II and designed by the architect Mimar Sinan, who regarded it as his most accomplished work. The building has a central dome approximately 31 metres in diameter, supported by eight massive piers, while four slender minarets rise around the mosque, each reaching almost 71 metres. Inside are examples of Ottoman calligraphy, carved marble and İznik tiles, including elaborate decoration around the mihrab. The mosque originally formed part of a larger complex containing religious schools and other buildings connected with education and charitable functions. Selimiye Mosque and its associated complex were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
