Quebec City was designed and built as a fortress, the only city north of Mexico. The rivalry between English and French in North America led to a war that lasted seven years and has led to the occupation of Quebec by British forces in 1759 and that designation of territory as British colony. The British made a treaty of surrender laincheierea compromise and promised to protect French language and culture. In 1791, the colony was divided into Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Quebec). In 1867, it declared the province of Quebec and became a founding member of the Canadian Dominion.
