Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is situated at the confluence of the River Sava and the Danube - two international waterways - where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkan. Also, the city is located along the European corridors X and VII. With a population of 1,710,000 (according to official estimates from 2007) residents, including citizens living temporarily abroad, Belgrade is the largest city in the former Yugoslavia, the third of the Danube, after Budapest and Vienna third in south-eastern Europe, after Istanbul and Athens - Bucharest is not located in the southeast, but rather in Central Europe.

As one of the oldest cities in Europe, with archaeological evidence of settlements from the fifth millennium BC, Belgrade, urban area to have been the birthplace of culture Vinci, the largest European prehistoric culture. The location was discovered by the Greeks, Celts built it and called the White City (a name that translated into Serbian, yet it bears, since 878 AD), the Romans were granted city rights before be fully populated by Serbs white. The city was battled over in 115 wars and was destroyed 44 times since the ancient period of many armies of the East and West. In medieval times, are successively ruled by the Byzantines, Franks, Bulgarians, Hungarians and Serbs. In 1521, Belgrade was conquered by the Ottomans and became the seat Pashaluk Belgrade, the principal city of the Ottoman Europe and among European cities. The city became the capital of Serbia in 1841, after a period of suzerainty to the Austrian and Ottoman Empires. However, the northern part of the city remained in Austria until 1918, when Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart. The united city then became the capital of several incarnations of Yugoslavia, until 2006, when Serbia became an independent state.

Belgrade has the status of a separate territorial unit in Serbia, with an autonomous government. Its territory is divided into 17 municipalities, each with its own local council. It covers 3.6% of the total area of the country, and 24% of Serbia's population lives in the city. Belgrade is the center of economic, cultural, educational and scientific Serbia.

Belgrade has a diverse and heterogeneous architecture, from the center of Zemun, typical of a city in Central Europe, to a more modern and spacious, in New Belgrade. The oldest architectural style found in Kalemegdan Park. Outside the park, the oldest building dates only from the nineteenth century, due to geographical position and frequent wars and destructions. The oldest structure in Belgrade is a difficult Turkish mausoleum defined and the oldest house is an adobe hut in Dorćol, from the eighteenth century. Western influence began in the nineteenth century, when Belgrade was completely transformed from an oriental city from the contemporary architecture of that era, with influences from the arts neoclassical, romantic and academic. Serbian architects took over the late nineteenth century European trends, the National Theatre building, the Old Palace, Orthodox Cathedral, and later, in the early twentieth century, the National Assembly and National Museum, with Art Nouveau influences. Neo-Byzantine architecture elements are present in buildings such as Vuk Foundation, old Post Office in Kosovska street and holy places such as St. Mark's Church (the foundation of Gracanica monastery) and the Temple of Saint Sava.

During the period ruled by communists, many homes were built quickly and with small investments to accommodate the large inflow of people from rural areas immediately after the Second World War, sometimes leading to brutal architecture blocks of New Belgrade; socialist realism, a trend driven by a short period, resulting in buildings such as Trade Union Hall. However, the mid-1950s, modernist trends took over and still dominate the Belgrade architecture.
