Cairns is a town in remote northern region of Queensland, Australia. The town was named after Queensland Governor William Wellington Cairns. It was created to serve as a location for miners Hodgkinson River gold mine, but declined when he discovered an easier way in the city of Port Douglas. She later developed as a center rail, port for the export of sugar cane, gold and other metals and agricultural products Atherton Tableland region and surrounding areas.
The city expanded rapidly, reaching a population of 147,000 inhabitants in 2010. Tourism is the largest source of income for the region, followed closely by the sugar industry.
Cairns is situated to 1,700 km from Brisbane and about 2420 km from Sydney. It is a popular destination for foreign tourists due to tropical climate and proximity to many tourist attractions. Great Barrier Reef is situated less than an hour boat ride. Daintree and Cape Tribulation National Park located 130 km north of Cairns and are sought after areas to experience the tropical rain forest.
A notable feature of the city is also a swimming lagoon, surrounded by specially arranged for the adjacent grids. Lagoon also has a bike and pedestrian trail, along the shore.
According to the Australian tourism Authority, Cairns is the fourth tourist destination after the number of foreign tourists who visit the area, leading positions are occupied by the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
