Chisinau is the capital, the largest city and the administrative, territorial, economic, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Moldova. The city is located on the edge of the southeast slope of the Central Plateau of Moldova, in the forest steppe area, being crossed by the Bâc river, a right tributary of the Dniester.
Chisinau is 448 km from Bucharest (Romania) and 471 km from Kiev (Ukraine), capitals of neighboring states.
"The city of white stone" is the phrase that is called Chisinau. The respective nickname comes from the abundance of the buildings built of white limestone.
The city has its own symbolism: coat of arms, flag and anthem. The flag symbolizes the past, present and future of the city community.
The Arch of Triumph in Chisinau ranks 5th among the most beautiful Arch of Triumph, according to the rating of the magazine "Aeroflot Premium". - Arc de Triomphe: Also called the Holy Gates, the Arc de Triomphe in Chisinau is an architectural monument built in 1841 to commemorate the victory of the Russian armies over the Turks. Inside the arch is a bell that was cast from the metal of the Turkish cannons captured in the war. The height of the monument is 13 m, and the capitals of the four pillars of the construction were carved in Corinthian style. On the front is mounted a mechanical clock, illuminated at night, but does not announce the exact time by sound. The arch guarded the center of Chisinau for 174 years.
