Although scientists can not specify when the first Polynesian to set foot on land south-east of the island of Oahu, known today as Honolulu, oral stories and artifacts suggest that a settlement existed here since the twelfth century.
Honolulu means "protected bay", words that describe the calm deep water port. British Captain James Cook who discovered Hawaii on behalf of the Western world in 1778, he sailed around the island at night, missing the bay and tiny fishing villages along.
16 years later, another English seaman, Captain William Brown, discovered and named Wonderful Paradise Bay, a translation name given by locals.
When you spread the word about Brown's discovery, traders were ecstatic. Soon they arrived here by the hundreds and the calm fishing village became a busy port and then capital of the kingdom in 1845 Hawaii, Hawaii territorial capital in 1898 and, eventually, the capital of Hawaii in 1959.
Honolulu is a sophisticated cosmopolitan city and a center of business, politics, education, entertainment and art in Hawaii. Restaurants, spas, theaters, concerts, shopping, sports, nightlife and cultural events - Honolulu offers all the amenities of a world class destinations, with the addition of ideal temperatures throughout the year.
Places that should not be missed include Chinatown, Waikiki Beach, and Manoa Valley. There is also lots of activities: kayaking, diving area, surfing, horseback rides along the beach, shopping in Waikiki or dine in excellent restaurants.
Start the visit of the city itself, and then venture out to other areas of Oahu. You can find wonderful wherever you go and every day you're here.
