Kathmandu, the holy grail at the end of a hippie trail from Europe, has long attracted travelers who seek knowledge in this city. Hippies do not dominate the landscape, but many travelers are near them and adventurers.
The contrast between modern and traditional in Kathmandu is taken to the limit, with medieval atmosphere so different from Old Kathmandu Durbar Marg area. Old Town stretches from Thamel, Durbar Square in the south: a crowded street, where you feel like time stood still.
Many of the city's temples and palaces were built during the Malla Dynasty XIII-XVIII centuries, when three kingdoms of Kathmandu valley projects are competed.
Kingdoms were united by the Shah dynasty in 1768. Since 1846 much of the power he held a family Rana, Shah was only the facade. However in 1951 King Tribhuvan removed Rana family, the country is today a constitutional monarchy.
Kathmandu is at the center of Kathmandu Valley, where seven of the ten UNESCO World Heritage sites in Nepal. The city is an outdoor museum with a lot of temples, palaces, shrines and pagodas.
