About Puntarenas - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Being on the coast has positioned the city of Puntarenas to be an important part of Costa Rica's history. Its beaches in the Pacific Ocean attract many tourists, especially surfers. Puntarenas was discovered by Gil González Dávila in 1522. Despite the use of the Nicoya Gulf as an inlet to Costa Rica, the port of Puntarenas was not developed until 1840, when coffee production in the high areas reached exportable volumes. In 1845, the Congress of the Republic declared Puntarenas a port without customs duties. The fishing port helps the country to offer some of the most amazing fresh seafood, including lobster and shrimp. With the Puntarenas ferry, people can easily travel to the blue seas to reach the Nicoya Peninsula, where they can enjoy white sandy beaches, surfing and protected areas of forests and beaches.
Puntarenas | Puntarenas is the capital and largest city of the province of Puntarenas, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This city hosts over 100,000 residences, and its proximity to the ocean makes it a popular destination for locals and tourists
