Seoul (in hangul: 서울 or Teukbyeolsi Seoul) is the capital of Korea for 600 years, currently special city status. Since the establishment of the Republic of Korea (better known by the name of South Korea) in 1948, was the capital of this country, except for a brief period of time during the Korean War. It is located in the northwest, in the DMZ, on the Han River. It is the only city in South Korea without transcription Hanja. Seoul National Capital Area, which includes most metropolitan Incheon and Gyeonggi Province has 24.5 million inhabitants, is the second largest metropolitan area in the world. Almost half the population lives in South Korea's National Capital Area Seoul and almost a quarter in the city of Seoul, making it the most powerful economic, political and cultural South Korea.
With approximately 10 million inhabitants, the city Seoul is one of the most populated cities in the world. Density was allowed to become the city with the most connections in the digital global economy. It also has over 1 million registered vehicles, causing some traffic jams isolated after midnight.
Seoul City is located on the Han River in the center of the Korean Peninsula and was founded in 18 BC, when the Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea has set the capital on the site southeast of Seoul today. Then, the city became the capital during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. Seoul National Capital Area comprises four places in the UNESCO Palace Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Temple Jongmyo and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
Seoul is considered a global city, being the ninth in the 2008 Global Cities Index. He hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988 and 2002 FIFA World Cup. In Seoul's main headquarters of multinationals are Samsung, LG and Hyundai.
